Braintree Public School Intramural Program

What is Intramurals?

The term “intramural” simply means “within the walls”. It has been traditionally applied to sports, tournaments, and or special events which are limited to participants and teams from within a specific defined community such as a school or other institutional setting. Today’s programs are broader in nature, encompassing recreational as well as sports activities.

The purpose of the intramural program is to provide students the opportunity to participate in a variety of recreational activities after the regular school day. Participation in intramurals will provide your student a chance to improve his or her sport skills, give them a chance to make new friends, and demonstrate such qualities as sportsmanship, cooperation, and teamwork.

Intramural supervisors are high school faculty/staff who are selected because of their interest and dedication to the intramural program.

The goal of the intramural program is to provide students with an opportunity to participate in sport and recreational activities without the emphasis on high performance.

The program is also designed to provide activities in a safe environment while encouraging a healthy spirit of competition, sportsmanship and teamwork.

Other goals and objectives of the intramural program are:

  • Nurture a healthy spirit of competition, sportsmanship and teamwork.
  • Enhance social interaction.
  • Develop a sense of community within the school.
  • Expose students to leisure activities that will contribute to an active lifestyle and enhance physical fitness.

We hope that this program will help students learn how to approach life with energy, contribute to their enjoyment of leisure, and maintain a style of living that contributes to their emotional, social and physiological well-being.
